About

Petersen Barnes has been an established and trusted building name in Taranaki for nearly 30 years.

The business was started by brothers-in-law Murray Petersen and Neil Barnes in 1982, who earned a reputation for high-quality builds and professional service.

After 16 years, the business ran its course in 1998. 20 years on, it was given a new lease on life when Murray and Neil’s sons, cousins Sam and Malachi, were approached by a friend who wanted trusted builders to take on a cutting edge, technical new build. Petersen Barnes was reborn.

Since then, the Petersen Barnes legacy has been picked up with relish. We’re proud to remain a family-run business, delivering the same professional service and attention to detail that Petersen Barnes has always been known for.

Our specialty is working on custom, contemporary builds that demand perfection. Premium homes that make your guests go ‘wow’, and that are distinctly yours. We invite you to hold us to the highest possible standards, because we hold ourselves to them too.

We’re a hands-on company, so you’ll see us on the tools at all stages of your project. That means we can talk you through exactly what’s going on, and help to give advice if there’s something that could be done better. We know that you want to be kept in the loop, so we’ll go out of our way to communicate with you throughout the process.

Petersen Barnes is dedicated to making your building experience the best it can possibly be.

Sam Petersen

With nearly 25 years of building experience, there’s not much Sam hasn’t seen before. A builder with an eye for detail, Sam is uncompromising about things needing to be done right.

An expert project manager and quality control guy, Sam loves to be challenged by demanding projects. His friendly and professional service means he’s always available for a chat and he’s happy to talk through any aspect of your build.

Outside work, Sam and his wife are kept busy bringing up their three children. You might catch him in the surf at Fitzroy or Stent Road, or on the golf course at Ngāmotu.

Malachi Barnes

They say the best tradies know all the best bakeries, and if that’s true then Mal is truly one of the elite. A passionate second generation builder, like Sam, Mal takes immense pride in seeing projects through from concept to completion.

Mal’s been building for nearly 20 years, but his favourite building experiences come from the challenge of running Petersen Barnes. He’ll love your project as if it was his own, and gets huge satisfaction from delivering the very best end product.

Mal’s a proud husband and dad to two boys. A failed rugby career led Mal into his other passion, golf, though he remains a passionate supporter of New Plymouth Old Boys’ rugby club.

Talk to a real builder about your building project.
